Former Gov. Mitt Romney, who few would deny has had a tough political year, isn't letting that deter him from helping out his friends.
The former contender for the Republican presidential nomination will be on Cape Thursday at a reception for his fellow Republican and friend, state Rep. Jeffrey Davis Perry, R-Sandwich.
These two Republicans became friends during their shared time on Beacon Hill.
In 2006 when Perry's 2-month-old granddaughter Paige Victoria Perry died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Romney quietly offered his emotional support to the Perry family, out of the public eye.
Thursday's event is a fundraiser for Perry. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at the Cape Codder Resort, Route 132, Hyannis.
Banstable County Sheriff James Cummings will be the master of ceremonies.
The Democrats are also pulling out their big guns for this political season, including U.S. Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass.
Delahunt has been the focus of much national media attention for releasing excerpts of a letter from members of the Iraqi parliament laying down conditions for the security pact that the Bush administration seeks.
Along with Dan Wolf, CEO of Cape Air, Delahunt will host a fundraiser for state Rep. Sarah Peake, D-Provincetown, Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at 3 Prince St. in Provincetown.
The contributions suggested on the invitation are $500, $250 or $100.

Democrat Glenn Pare, a Sandwich art gallery owner challenging Perry for his legislative seat, wants to know what is on voters' minds. He's scheduled a series of town hall-like meetings, starting Wednesday.
The meeting will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 159 Main St., Sandwich. The district includes Sandwich and precincts in Bourne, Barnstable and Mashpee.
The Surf Club in Provincetown will be the site of a meet-the-candidate night arranged by Leonard Enos, Frederick Long and Christopher Snow on behalf of Anastasia Welsh Perrino, who hopes to become the Republican candidate for Barnstable County register of probate.
The event will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and donations will be accepted. For more information, call 508-776-2684.
And last week's question — which states do not allow online voter registrations? — stumped most of you. Jane Simmons of South Yarmouth got it right, though — New Hampshire, Wyoming and North Dakota.
