Giuliani's pre-9/11 mentality

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
The Obama campaign and the DNC struck back at Giuliani for criticizing Obama for pointing out the handling of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing trial as an example of how to deal with terrorists in American courts.

In an e-mail, entitled, “Giuliani v Giuliani: 1993 World Trade Center Bombing Case,” the Obama campaign points out that in 1993, Giuliani said at the time, per the New York Times, March 5, 1994: “Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani declared that the verdict ‘demonstrates that New Yorkers won't meet violence with violence, but with a far greater weapon -- the law.’”

Also from that day’s Times: “Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said he hoped that the verdicts would lessen tensions rather than increase them. ‘It should show that our legal system is the most mature legal system in the history of the world,’ he said, ‘that it works well, that that is the place to seek vindication if you feel your rights have been violated.’”

The DNC takes its shot at Giuliani with an e-mail with a title, parroting Joe Biden’s Greatest Debate Hits: “Rudy, ‘Noun, verb, 9/11’ Giuliani returns.”

“Democrats are not going to be lectured to on security by the mayor who failed to learn the lessons of the 1993 attacks, refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack, urged President Bush to put his corrupt crony in charge of our homeland security, and was too busy lobbying for his foreign clients to join the Iraq Study Group,” DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney said. “Rudy Giuliani, can echo the McCain campaign’s false and misleading attacks, but he can’t change the fact that John McCain is promising four more years of President Bush’s flawed and failed policies on everything from energy security and the economy to the war in Iraq.”

Within the DNC’s research is a quote from Giuliani from CBS Evening News following the trial verdict. First Read was able to find more of the context from the transcript from March 5, 1994.

CBS’s DAVID CULHANE: And for their own safety, the 12 jurors remained anonymous today. One juror did tell reporters it was the overwhelming detail of the five-month prosecution that persuaded them to convict. But at the Jersey City mosque where several of the defendants worshipped, friends described the case as a miscarriage of American justice. New York's mayor disagrees.

Mayor RUDOLPH GIULIANI (Republican, New York City): I think it shows you put terrorism on one side, you put our legal system on the other, and our legal system comes out ahead.

Earlier on the call hitting Obama, Giuliani said, “The real problem is [Obama] having said that in essence, the 1993 situation was really correctly handled by it's being a criminal prosecution, and these people were incapacitated. The reality is that I think most experts on terrorism who are non-partisan would tell you that that was a terrible mistake in not recognizing the full dimension of what we were involved with.”

Giuliani likely would say that his comments came pre-9/11 and perhaps also reflected a limited pre-9/11 mentality. That said, he made the point about the pre-9/11 mentality on the call, but didn’t say he necessarily subscribed to it also.

The republicans need to read some history before they go on the attack.  Barack Obama seems to have a much clearer understanding of the United States Constitution than McCain.

We should fear a government that attempts to take away basic rights.

Oops, Julie, you been BUSTED!!
The American people in 1993 did their duty in sending those criminals to jail.

There is no reason not to trust in the American people that they will have the strength to do what is needed to keep this country safe again.

Pay attention to the Constitution.  It protects our nation, *and every individual in it.*

GOP - The Flip-Flopper Party
New Book:

Facing The Truth About the American Voter, Author Rick Shenkman (Presidential Ambition)

From Publishers Weekly
The author makes the provocative argument that as American voters have gained political power in the last 50 years, they have become increasingly ignorant of politics and world affairsand dangerously susceptible to manipulation. The book provides a litany of depressing statisticsmost Americans cannot name their representatives in Congress, only 20% hold a passport, 30% cannot identify the Holocaustas Shenkman inquires whether Americans are capable of voting in the nation's or even their own best interests. Although Shenkman clearly derives some pleasure in pointing out the stupidity and irrationality of the American public, his concern is genuine and heartfelt. In lucid, playful prose, he illustrates how politicians have repeatedly misled voters and analyzes the dumbing down of American politics via marketing, spin machines and misinformation. Shenkman initiates an important conversation in this book and makes welcome suggestions to reinvigorate civic responsibility and provide people with the knowledge and tools necessary to efficaciously participate in the political process.

Rudy, the country is waking up to the Republican Party. There isn't anything left for them to destroy.

1993 happened on your watch.

September 11th happened on your watch.

Tell us why the firefighters have nothing good to say about you.

How did your run for the presidency turn out? Not so good did it. Gee, I wonder why.
Ouch. Rudy and McFossil.....Thanks for playing!
Keep making us proud Senator Obama - you are running a MASTERFUL campaign! Can't wait to see Rudy Guiliani try to explain this away - he's certainly no foreign policy expert. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

After troopergate, he has proven that his judgment is not the best, no?
Mayor Rudy is a great hero from 9/ll and should be respected and he supports navy man John McCain for president.  Huckabee would be a better VP for a moral America but Rudy has been there and can say something about terrorists in American and the liberalists can't with their muslim leader Obama who will give away everything.
Obama supporters,

Watch out. I got a spy in on the underground political scene, and they brough me back a top secret file... guess what?

"PUMA" = "Petty Undercover McCain Agents"

Woah. That blew my mind.
What I found out from reading the article ... Rudy Giuliani still only spews out A NOUN , A VERB and 9/11.

I see that nothing has changed ! ... Nothing.
So Giuliani used to be a rational, pragmatic politician.  The Republican party has more flip-flops than a Teva factory!

Although I've had my fair share of run-ins with the law, I'm looking forward to the restoration "the most mature legal system in the history of the world", which certainly won't be happening with Old Man McCain in the White House.

Obama 08
Wow!  Great comeback!   Keep'em rolling!

Obama 08
The Republicans are hypocrites.  They push that we must have judges who don't legislate from the bench, but return to the original intent of the Founding Fathers. Now that it gets in the way of their lawbreaking, they want to trash the Constitution!

Tell me how it makes us safer to have terrorist thugs returned to the streets because we will not admit that people have the right to hear and challenge the charges against them, and the right to representation?

It is time to vote these idiots out of office.
From FR:

‘…a new Quinnipiac survey. In Florida, it’s Obama 47%, McCain 43%. In Ohio, it’s Obama 48%, McCain 42%. And in Pennsylvania, it’s Obama 52%, McCain 40%....’

PUH-LEEEZE !!
Obama won’t win Florida (will he ?)
It’s too good to be true
(like disco Super Fly…)

That's why McCain MUST MAKE Guiliani his running mate
... to take back Florida !!

McCain/Guiliani '08
Let's find some chicks !!

John McCain OPPOSES Roe vs Wade
John will appoint judges who will OVERTURN Roe vs Wade

John McCain, keeping you barefoot and pregnant…
(then, dumping you for some hot, young chick)
(then, calling his new chick a cu*t)

I know the history very well.....

Bill Clinton was more into his girlfriend on the side then caring about the security of the country.  He had his chance to capture Bin Laden, Sudan had him gift wrapped.  He was more worried about how history would look at him rather then save the country from a terrorist attack.  We found out how much he cared about his "legacy" when he lied to a grand jury, was brought up on impeachment charges and showed how much of a man he was by cheating on his wife and daughter.  If Bill Clinton had paid enough the same kind of attention to Bin Laden as he did Monica, this country could have fought off the attacks.  My side dropped the ball as well, but we have gone on the offensive while the liberals have pretty much waved the white flag.  So sad to see a group of Americans want to surrender the country to terrorists.
Is it just me or is the Obama Machine so much better prepared than the McCain camp? Hats off to the Obama researchers who are ready in a moment to show the glaring hypocrisy of McCain and his mouthpieces.

Nothing trumps crap more than TRUTH and QUOTES!
“Democrats are not going to be lectured to on security by the mayor who failed to learn the lessons of the 1993 attacks, refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack, urged President Bush to put his corrupt crony in charge of our homeland security, and was too busy lobbying for his foreign clients to join the Iraq Study Group,”

I am so happy that the Democratic Party is no longer the party that simply puts up a good defense against attacks.  This is the best kind of response, and I have to believe the age of Democrats conceding national security to the Republicans is over.  This particular incident is a great example of if you live in a glass house, don't throw rocks.
Talk about twisting words around, Sen Obama never said "let's wait to arrest the terrorists AFTER they do harm to us" it seems he's saying let's go after them, but make sure they're terrorists by trying and convicting them.  The GOP watched "Minority Report" and fell in love with arresting and detaining people for what they "might" or "intend" to do w/o the benefit of proof beyond "we have credible intel that says they will"  During the Bush administration "credible intel" has become an oxymoron.
In your face Giuliani!

You don't know what the hell you're talking about.  And neither does McCain.

Idiots
"Giuliani likely would say that his comments came pre-9/11 and perhaps also reflected a limited pre-9/11 mentality. That said, he made the point about the pre-9/11 mentality on the call, but didn’t say he necessarily subscribed to it also."

Since when is it your job to come up with hypothetical defenses for Giuliani?
Rudy is such a joke! How is he even relevant?

He learned from 9/11 that if 1993 would have been handled as an act of war and not just a criminal trial that maybe 9/11 could have been prevented.  So Guiliani flip flopped on his stance after 9/11 so did everyone in the country except some die hard idiot democrats, the fact is that they changed as well post 9/11, almost every democrat voted to go to war to pass all the things that were proposed, but now that it is an election year they the dems are flopping back.  Barack is not a very smart individual if he thinks that putting terrorist through our own legal system in a good answer.
Secondly,  "refused to prepare his own city’s first responders for the next attack"  Those are pretty strong words to the families and friends of the  first responders who risked and gave their lives at 9/11.  How does the DNC think that they could have been more prepared for radicals to fly planes into the towers and pentagon?  These responders were brave and did respond well, I think that that statement has convinced me now that I can no longer vote democrat.  THey the DNC don't give a hoot about people only their own agendas.
THird,  If Clinton would not have ignored all of the attacks on American servicemen throughout his 8 years and not allowed the Jihadist's to get so strong then there would probably be a whole lot less grief in New York City!
The good mayor suffers from what John McCain suffers from the disease of" flip flopping".  They pointed out in 2004 that John Kerry suffered from this disease and as such was not fit for the Presidency.  I can only guess they believe that "flip flopping" is only attributable to democrats not republicans.
What they realy suffer from is political opportunitism. This is saying and doing what ever it takes to get elected.  Obama has been consistent in his comments and positions on this topic.  Is this not a test of true leadership and judgment? If it is both the Good Mayor and John McCain have fallen short.
If the McCain, Giuliani, and repub logic is to be enforced, (which I believe it should not), why have'nt all the disgruntled militia types, who have committed acts of terrorism, and, fanned the flames of propaganda to wage war with our  government, not been rounded up, and dumped at Gitmo as well?

This is hypocritical. What is at the forefront of all of this hatred?

It is amazing how comfortable people are trashing the terms 'Islam', and 'Muslim'. They reference these titles with the same intolerance that folks used to throw around the 'N', word.

Where is voice of social consciousness these days? The unchecked, unchallenged, and yes, bigoted rhetoric in the air this election cycle is alarming.
No need to defend Guliani in the last paragraph, First Read.  Why is it that Republicans have such a short memory? Rudi should have known better, coming from a law enforcement background.  He was correct in 1993 -- we are a nation of laws, and those laws are what used to (before Bush and his neocons came by and used the Constitution as toilet paper) make us better than any single terrorist or rogue feudal state.

It's high time to restore the rule of law by having an informed, thoughtful President in Obama.  4 more years of Bush/McDementia may end up dealing the deathblow to our beloved country.
You tell 'em!!!! Seems like the Repubs have a terminal case of situational ethics - whatever situation they are trying to get out of determines their ethics. I prefer leaders who are consistent in their philosophies and values.
The worst attack on American soil happened on 9/11rudy and ignorant cowboy george's watch...rather than take ANY responsibility, they use it as a political tool to try to get another incompetent self righteous bufoon elected as POTUS. I didn't fall for it the first time, and I'm hoping America won't fall for it ever again. Just say NO to mcbush!!
Guliani, You are making a fool of yourself by saying anything to get on the VP ticket. Keep it up and you won't even be able to collect the outrageous speaking fees you charge.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. - Benjamin Franklin  There is nothing greater or stronger or speaks with more eloquence than a court of law.  Hurrah for Barack Obama
"Boom-bye-bye!!  inna Republican '(h)ead!"

Courtesy Buju Banton.  That's right DNC:  Keep shinning the light through the glaring holes in their arguments!!

Don't let them get away with ANYTHING!!
The Democratic Party Refuses to Lie Down and Be Trampled by these Non-Truth-Telling Loosers.

Once again they say what they need to say to win and change FLIP FLOP positions in their best interest.

Thank Goodness for the Internet.  They had better be careful about their past statements when playing hypocrits as usual

We are a nation of laws built on the Constitution by our founders who were wise enough to see this type of disrespect for the consitiution far in advance.  That's why they left us the constitution to protect and uphold the freedoms of this country and We  The People.

We are not a Rogue nation absent of laws.

FLIP FLOP< FLIP FLOP

McCain against Off Shore Drilling, now he and the President are for it

McCain was for taxing Big Oil, now he's against it

McCain was against Off Shore Drilling and now he For It since it will yeild 136 Electoral Votes in VA.  Now he takes the President and Big Oil Position.  Sen. McCain tell We The People exactly what we will pay at the pump when the drilling is done.  $1.49 a gallon perhaps as it was before the war? Total irresponsible to throw out this idea, the President Ask Congress and the Republicans nor McCain or the President can gaurantee Americans a Price at the Pump?

McCain against Tax Cuts for the Rich said his something about Conscience would not conceive of it, now he for them

Sen. McCain for getting rid of Secret Prisons now, against it and against the Constution as up held by the most recent Supreme Court Decision

Sen. McCain Voted against Oversight in Iraq NOW 9 BILLIONS DOLLARS IS MISSING AND UNACCOUNTED FOR

Sen. McCain Refused to go back to Washington on Thursday to Vote to give Women Rights For Equal Pay on the same jobs as MEN.  Women are you really listening?

Sen. McCain Voted Against the bill to raise minimum wage 8 times (for hard working Americans) Yet We  The People gave Congress a continual raise

American Can No Longer Afford Politicians, Republicans who are in this for themselves despite the Suffering Americans are enduring in this Republican Caused Recession.

Republicans are not talking about the RECESSION and how Americans are suffering.......................

They are talking about their #1 Priority..............

The War, Fear Mongering, and enriching their own profits with Big Oil...........................

Now ask yourself can we really afford these guys?
Yep - Obama is 100% per cent - our civil liberties are not negotiable - the "inconvenience" associated with civil liberties - is that ALL are protected - not just those on the side of those in power - but that "inconvenience" is - in truth - what protects us all.
of
Obama merely agreed with a decision by a right-leaning majority of the SCOTUS...

Guess not all Republicans really agree with discarding Habeas Corpus either! (Definitely not the ones on the Supreme Court!!)

Republicans need to stop wasting our time with "BS"; and start getting into the real agenda of actually catching the guy who caused all of those deaths in NYC.

If we spent as much time prosecuting Justice as we have spent prosecuting an un-necessary war, the entire world would be a better place!!

Osama Bin Laden is STILL OUT THERE!! CATCH HIM DAMMIT!!
There must be trouble in McCainland if the republicans are trotting out Giuliani, who spent millions of dollars on a campaign that netted him ZERO delegates. The republicans are on the wrong side of this issue and related terrorism/detainee/turture issues. It will be their undoing - thinking Americans will not trade the decency and humanity of their country for a delusional scenario based on fear.
The next few weeks will be tough for Obama if he doesn't change topic back to economy & deliver his plan for dealing with gas prices in a clear demonstrative manner.

He's not explaining McCain's plan won't do anything for 5 years and even then it will only give us 3 cents/gallon.

He's not saying clearly, his tax breaks & proposed stimulus will give us each $1500 in our pockets next year while trying to get these windfall profits from big oil.

People are frustrated & need soundbites sometimes.
Politicians must hate the internet!  I did a google search on oil platform spills and caught Gingrich in a lie (they do leak, they do harm beaches)  Oops 300 electoral votes now at risk.
I understand this is probably not as easy as splitting the atom, but can someone tell me what a person has to do to get a comment posted?
The Republican party is turning into the party of flip-floppers..

I mean you can't be proud to be a republican right now..they are clearly behind the times..and all you see are old guys coming out saying things that just don't fly in this internet driven society..

Republicans actually believe that when they say something that no one will repeat it..or that there is no one listening..

At this point in American history, republicans  the intense media scrutiny of Barack Obama has done something to your party.... it has put the spotlight squarely on all of your flaws as well....

P.S.

I'm curious to see how Guilliani flips and flops out of his direct quotes back in the 1990's..which by the way both incidents happened under his watch..
Just like with a lot of things in life, things change. In '93 we had not had any foreign attacks on US soil for over 50 years. You can say what ever you want about Giuliani, but it was Clinton, and the lack of any type of response to these attacks, that emboldened the terrorists. During the '90s. Clinton spent more time on being popular and tending to his personal needs rather then doing the necessary things to protect the country. On 9/11, we saw the result of Clinton's actions. Now we have Obama who wants to do treat terrorists the same exact way Clinton did. And if Obama is President, we will see the exact same results, and probably worse because the terrorists are probably getting closer to having a nuke.

If Obama is President, I would recommended people move from the cities to the suburbs. At least you'd have a chance.
