Stances on The Issues

Abortion

  • Opposed restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions.

  • Opposed criminal penalties for harming an unborn fetus in the commission of another crime.

  • Supported the ban on partial-birth abortion except to save the mother’s life.

  • Opposes federal funding of abortion under any circumstance.

  • Says that as an OB doctor of over 30 years, he can assure that life begins at conception.

  • Has said it will be a good day for America if Roe v. Wade is repealed.

  • In that case, he believes the decision should be left to the states.

  • Advocates adult stem-cells as an alternative to embryonic stem-cell research.

  • Has said that abortions should only be legal in cases of incest, rape or cases in which the mother’s life is in danger.

  • As Governor of Wisconsin, oversaw the banning of partial-birth abortion and the encouragement of adoption.

Civil Rights

  • Supports definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, but opposes any federal marriage definition, constitutional or otherwise.

  • Says that states should not be forced to honor another state’s recognition of same-sex marriage.

  • Voted against making the PATRIOT Act permanent.

  • Voted against a constitutional amendment banning flag desecration.

  • Does not support legislation to counteract the homosexual agenda.

Crime + Gun Control

  • Changed opinion to anti death penalty due to many mistakes.

  • Opposes "hate crimes" legislation.

  • Voted YES on funding for alternative sentencing instead of more prisons.

  • Voted NO on more prosecution and sentencing for juvenile crime.

  • Believes airlines, not the federal government, should be responsible for making rules regarding guns on airplanes.

  • Wants to ease the procedures on the purchase and registration of firearms.

  • Supports allowing citizens to carry concealed firearms.

Drugs/Alcohol

  • Believes personal retirement accounts allow investing in one’s future.

  • Wants to allow young people to get out of the Social Security system.

  • Says he has never voted for a tax increase and never will.

  • Advocates repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax and instituting a Flat Tax.

  • Has said that tax cuts are an investment in working families.

Education

  • Would not impeach judges for decisions on legislature prayers.

Environment

  • Says that Big Oil profits are okay, but subsidies are not.

  • Voted NO on prohibiting oil drilling and development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Voted NO on speeding up approval of forest thinning projects.

  • Voted NO on keeping moratorium on drilling for oil offshore.

Health Care

  • Believes insurance companies and the government make health care unaffordable.

  • Says socialized medicine and managed care won’t work.

  • Opposes mandated health insurance and universal coverage.

  • Says it is not the government’s role to protect people like Terri Schiavo.

  • Supports an insurance reward for avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and obesity.

  • Voted NO on denying non emergency treatment for lack of Medicare co pay.

  • Voted YES on allowing reimportation of prescription drugs.

  • Voted NO on banning physician assisted suicide.

Immigration

  • Supported strict House immigration reform legislation which did not provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

  • Voted in favor of constructing a 700-mile fence along the southern border.

  • Does not support amnesty, but believes it is impractical to round up 12 million illegal immigrants.

  • Supports the rule barring immigrants from running for president.

  • Voted YES on reporting illegal aliens who receive hospital treatment.

  • Has said that he supports providing a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants so long as they have no criminal record, pay back taxes and fines, learn English and have resided in the United States for certain durations.

  • Has said that the nation’s immigration policy should not reward those who arrived in the country illegally.

Other

  • Medical/Science - Opposed federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research because programs like it are not authorized under the Constitution.

War and Peace

  • Voted against the Iraq war authorization resolution because he believes Congress should have voted on a declaration of war as specified in the Constitution, or not at all.

  • Has also said that we shouldn’t have gotten into it “for political reasons or to enforce U.N. resolutions or pretend the Iraqis were a national threat to us.”

  • Advocates a foreign policy of nonintervention, and believes that “we shouldn’t go to war so carelessly. When we do, the wars don’t end.”

  • Has suggested that the abandonment of non-interventionist policies incite anti-American hatred and attacks “because we’re over there” in the middle-east.

  • Supports a stronger national defense by changing our foreign policy.

  • Says there is no constitutional or moral authority for US action in Darfur.

  • Believes we are right to spread our values, but wrong to spread by force.

  • Says our foreign policy is designed to protect our oil interests.

  • Criticizes the use of the war on terror to curtain civil liberties.

  • Believes pre emptive war is not a part of the American tradition.

  • Feels Congressional authorization would be needed to attack Iran’s nukes.

  • Says we went to war in Iraq under false pretenses of WMDs and 9/11.

  • Believes that radicals come to kill us because we occupy their land.

  • Has argued that the al-Maliki government in Iraq should vote on whether or not they want the U.S. to continue its presence there or go home.

  • Advocates elected governments for each of the 18 Iraqi territories, and requiring them to split oil revenue: “one-third to the federal government, one-third to the territories, and one-third to every man, woman and child.”
